INTRO

Porlock is Climb #4 of Simon Warren's 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs, Britain. This is a very challenging road bike climb out of the tiny coastal village of Porlock in Somerset, southern England.  Porlock Hill is ranked the third hardest hill climb in England and #8 UK.

Cycling Porlock Hill

Porlock Hill is one of the 3 hardest climbs in England and a Top 10 UK Hill Climb.

Porlock Hill starts in the town of Porlock itself which is situated right on the coastline. As the street signs indicate with multiple warnings to watch for out of control vehicles, this road is insanely steep. Sections -particularly in the first half- near 25%. After negotiating the brutally steep turns, you'll rise out of the trees and have an incredible view of the Bristol Bay below. Although the climb is short, she really packs a meaningful punch and is in a very interesting little corner of England. There is parking available near the summit marker in an unmarked dirt lot used by hikers.

 

Climb begins in the coastal village of Porlock (pop. 1,440, 2011).

Porlock Hill is within Hawkcombe Woods National Nature Reserve:

“Hawkcombe Woods is a national nature reserve near Porlock on Exmoor, Somerset, England.  The 101 hectares (250 acres) woodlands are notable for their lichens, heath fritillary butterfly, red wood ant colonies, dead wood invertebrates and ancient pollards.  They are part of the North Exmoor Site of Special Scientific Interest”  (Hawkcombe Woods).
